The Elite: The Selection (Book 2)
The book I was reading this quarter is called: “The Elite”, Book 2 from The Selection series, written by Kiera Cass. The story takes place in the royal palace of Illèa, the country the old United States had became. The main character, a seventeen year old girl named America that was chosen long ago to be part of The Selection, the competition of 35 girls to win Prince Maxon’s hart and hand, was chosen to be part of The Elite, a group of six girls who are still competing for the prince’s love. America started to realize she really loved Maxon but was still undecided to choose to be his wife, Illea’s new princess, and later on queen. America still has feelings for her first love, Aspen who she had a story long before she entered The Selection, he was now a guard on the palace and lived as close to her as ever, she got to see him often, it was more difficult for her to forget him, and the thought about all the important choices she would have to make for an entire country put her to doubt about her decision of marring Prince Maxon.
Her indecision had become a problem because Maxon told her that if it wasn't for that, he would have ended the competition and she would had stay with him but since America didn't know what to do, Maxon had been trying to pass more time with the other girls who are on The Elite to see who can be his other choice for a wife if America doesn't accept and certainly, she didn't like that.
In The Elite, the girls started to learn the rules that were efficient in running a country, they sere starting to get prepared if they had the chance to become princess. At that time, Halloween was now something old, no one knew what it was and only found in antique books. Maxon takes America to the secret Royal library and gives her a Journal of the first Illèa King, Gregory Illèa, there she could read all about Halloween…as a special gift for her, Maxon did a Halloween party and invited the families of all the girls. One day, America’s best friend, Marlee is escorted outside of the palace by being in an adventure with another guard, it was considered as a crime, she was immediately out of the competition. America stills sees Aspen and didn't care about what happened to Marlee. One day, America finds out that Maxon was on a date with Celeste, her biggest enemy, she then decided she didn't have anymore chances to be with Maxon, she wanted to get out of the competition. In a public presentation, she announced her desire to eliminate the caste system on the country, Maxon defended her but she know needed to leave The Elite by denouncing that problem in public. Before she leaves, Maxon goes after her and tells her that he sent another girl home, Natalie instead of her, that he still loves her but didn't trust her, that she could stay with the warning that she needed to behave properly.
I think this book is worth reading because here you can understand more facts than in the first book, The Selection. The problems, the difficulties that the main character America is living in The Elite are clearer. For example, her indecision of being or not being with Maxon is more than that, it causes the problem of the Prince spending time with the other girls, her public announcement of getting rid of castes and her big chance of leaving the competition.
I think the theme of this book is: “Your choices in life can cause situations you aren't even counting with.” I think this theme is something that matters in life because you need to learn to take good choices in your life, you should think about all the consequences that they could lead to, the things you need to live with after your decision. “ It was hard to think of Maxon as my boyfriend when there were other girls dating him, but he wasn’t just my friend. That hopeful feeling hit me again, the wonder that we might be something special. Maxon was more to me than I’d let myself believe,” this is an example of the book that shows what happens with America’s choice of not choosing to be only with Maxon, that is one of her consequences, that other girls are dating the Prince.
I recommend this book to a person that likes tragic love stories because I think that they would enjoy reading about what happens in a situation that is romantic but unfortunate at the same time.
