The book I read for independent reading is called "Eleanor and Park" by Rainbow Rowell. I think that the story was interesting because the characters had very different lives and personalities but, they still connected in a strange and unusual way. The story happens in Omaha, Nebraska in a yellow bus, a high school and a neighborhood. Eleanor is new to the high school, that has red, curly hair, and many people bullied her for that and call her awful names. One day in the school bus, she sits down with a boy named Park. They didn't talk at all but after some days, when they knew eachother a little bit more, they did talk. Park is a part koean that was an unusual boy who didn't like football. Instead, he liked to read comics and hear many bands and good singers. Eleanor also liked his hobbies and when he brought comics to the bus in the morning, she started reading them and he was aware of it so, he turned the pages of the comic book when he saw her finishing reading. Park started lending to Eleanor his comics and she read them overnight and returned them to him the next morning on the bus. It did not matter if she returned to him the comics or if Park gave her new comics to read, they would not talk. then, after some weeks, they started talking about music they liked and she borrowed some of his tape players. They started sharing their interests. Which bands they liked, all about the heroes that were in the comics and they found out they had many things in common. They fell in love instantly. Eleanor's family was complicated. She has four siblings and her mom that was married for the second time to a man (called Richie) that HATED Eleanor and always called her bad words. He did not know of the secret she had with Park of being in love with him and she always hanging out in his house with his lovely parents (most of the time), and them being a couple. Eleanor thought she wpuld get kicked out from her house again, or worse, if Richie figured it out and he did so, Park wanted Eleanor to be safe. He decided that she needed to leave her house for her security and he drives her to her uncle's house. Park would NEVER forgive what Richie did to them, of separating them.

The title of the story I picked is "Checkouts" by Cynthia Rylant. I think tht this story does not have many details and it may be confusing for the reader.
